Hello fellow pilots,

I have had a brief discussion with Tim about this idea and we'd like to see what other pilots think about it for future release. Hopefully others will think it's a good idea, but we won't know until you feedback.

As a Yak 52 pilot, I'm very much aware of its somewhat bad record for the number of 'wheels-up' landings this aircraft type has. There seems to be no particular reason for this occuring more in a Yak 52 than any other aircraft, however it is a statistical fact. Furthermore, on a regular basis, I read in the AAIB bulletins that many other aircraft suffer from 'wheels-up' landings. This got me to thinking...

Whilst there should be no excuse for a pilot to forget to lower the undercarriage on landing the fact is it seems to happen on a regular basis. Wouldn't be good if there was one final reminder to "Check Undercarriage" before you made an expensive mistake.

Whilst I wouldn't want SkyDemon to detract from being an excellent navigation product, which it really is, I was wondering if it would be possible to add a user selectable feature which would work along the lines of something like this:

Where a destination airfield has been selected, upon approaching the airfield and upon the aircraft descending to say 300' above the airfield, SkyDemon could temporarily display an alert screen reminding pilots to carry out final checks or simply "Check Undercarriage". Nothing wordy, just an alert reminder, possibly flashing.

I know this detracts a little bit from the primary function of SkyDemon, but in my experience usually by the time you are on finals you're not really using the GPS to navigate, however it is usually in most pilot's eye-line and therefore probably a good place to flash a reminder.

Tim has already confirmed that SkyDemon already knows the altitude of the aircraft, the altitude of the airfield and that you're on final approach so there's no reason why it couldn't offer this function; However he is keen to know what other pilots think, his main concern being an interruption by their GPS unit at this critical stage in flight.

In my opinion, there should be no excuse for pilots failing to do their final checks, however it's obvious that it does happen quite a lot and if SkyDemon could save a wheels-up landing, then I think it would have yet another edge over other products, which are already miles behind.

Apologies for the lengthy post, but what do you fellow pilots think?

Thanks,

Dom

Personally id like to see complete checklists, editable by the user.

What i fly is all 3 down and welded, so as far as wheels go, im all good.

A big flashing sign say ¨Check Wheels¨ at 300 feet, user switchable: A very good idea.

Very Newbytheway

well in the new version you can already set reminders and alerts. This is mainly based on a time intervall.

I am sure a small modification can link the alert to ligning up with a runway and a set altitude.

If there is time that must be fairly simple to add. However I can see that Tim may hesitate as this is a function that not all Skzdemon user will use, as you should know all checks by heart also then relying on GPS system to remind you..

in the new 2.0 or 2.1 version once the gps is started click on the Skydemon icon-->Flight--> timers

I have a FREDA check running every 10 min and have it set to get it manually dismissed.

This is all free text so enter what u want. I am sure instead of a timer this can be coded to be based on Altitude if Tim wants it.
